Notes on Startups, or How to Build the Future
Summarized by Hilal Safwan
“Every moment in business happens only once. The next Bill Gates will not build an operating system. The next Larry Page or Sergey Brin will not make a search engine. If you are copying these giants, you are not learning from them.”

The Psychological Weapon of Ambition
This book is not a polite manual for starting a company. It is a psychological weapon. It forces you to ask the hardest question in human ambition. What valuable company is nobody building? Most people choose to compete out of fear. They look at what already exists and try to make it slightly better. They run into a crowded market. That is a death trap. That takes the world from 1 to n. It adds more of the same, driving prices down and profits to zero. The real wealth and progress come from doing something entirely new. Going from 0 to 1. Technology is miraculous because it allows us to do more with less, ratcheting up our fundamental capabilities to a higher level. By creating new technologies, we rewrite the plan of the world. This book shatters the illusion that competition is healthy. Competition is for losers. Competition destroys profits and turns your life work into a commodity. If you want to build something that lasts, you must build a monopoly. You must find a massive secret that nobody else knows. You must build a tribe to pursue it and completely dominate a small niche market before the rest of the world realizes what you are doing. The present is the past biting into the future. You must be the teeth.
Capitalism and Competition Are Enemies
The core thesis is brutal and uncompromising. Capitalism and competition are polar opposites. Capitalism is premised on the accumulation of capital. Competition is premised on the destruction of capital. In a perfectly competitive market, no one makes any real money. The margins are squeezed to nothing. If you want to survive, you must escape competition entirely. You must build a business so unique and dominant in its specific niche that no one else can even try to offer what you offer. You must become a monopoly. Creative monopoly means new products that benefit everybody and sustainable profits for its creator. Monopolies are the engines of progress. They are the only businesses that can afford to think long term. Long term planning is often undervalued by our indefinite short term world. Founders only sell when they have no more concrete visions for the company. Definitive founders with robust plans do not sell. A startup is the largest endeavor over which you can have definitive mastery. Do not do anything someone else can do. Today best practices lead to dead ends. Question received ideas and rethink business from scratch. The most contrarian thing of all is not to oppose the crowd, but to think for yourself.
You Are Not a Lottery Ticket
You are not a lottery ticket. Success is not a matter of pure luck or random statistical noise. Napoleon said it best when he asked what luck is. He defined it as the ability to exploit accidents. If you believe success is just a matter of being in the right place at the right time, you will never build anything of consequence. You will never commit to a definite plan. You must believe in secrets. The best entrepreneurs know this. Every great business is built around a secret that is hidden from the outside. A great company is a conspiracy to change the world. When you share your secret, the recipient becomes a fellow conspirator. Furthermore, the foundational architecture of your company matters more than anything else. A startup messed up at its foundation cannot be fixed. A small company depends on great people much more than a big company does. Since time is your most valuable asset, it is odd to spend it working with people who you do not envision any long term future together. Recruiting is a core competency for any company. It should never be outsourced. Your company should be a tribe of like minded people fiercely devoted to the company mission. No company has a culture. Every company is a culture.
